I had done a lot of research before buying the RX-Q. I wanted a high quality, Hi –Viz helmet and had narrowed the choices down to the Arai and the Schuberth. I went with the Arai because of the features and the cheaper price.
Right out of the box, I realized that the RX-Q is not really Hi-Viz, certainly not when compared to say my Hi-Viz jacket! It is kind of a dull, yellow with hints of orange in certain light (more on this in a minute).
On my first ride, I noticed a very loud buzzing from the top of the helmet whenever I closed the 2 little top vents on the top of the helmet. This was so loud and annoying that I had to keep the vents open, until it got too cold, then I had to duct tape the vents closed which silenced them completely. I called Revzilla the next day and they were GREAT. They contacted Arai for me who told me there was a revision on the vents and that mine had the older vents (my 2 day old helmet had a born on date of Oct 2010 and had old parts??) and I could either send my helmet back to them for repairs or they would send me the parts and I could repair it myself. Arai said it was a simple fix, that the vents are just held on with sticky tape, so I told them to just send the parts.
Arai was very helpful and apologetic. I also spoke to them about the fit of the helmet and they walked me through steps to test the fit of the liner/pads. In the end, we decided that while I had the right size shell, I needed slightly thicker cheek pads and head liner and that they would ‘help me out’ on these for all of my troubles. So, Arai shipped me the replacement vents and the new liner and the cheek pads.
Good news is that the new liner and cheek pads made a HUGE DIFFERENCE in the fit/comfort of the helmet. I mean night and day – this is a very comfortable helmet. The BAD news is that Arai charged me full list for the parts…hundred bucks!! So much for helping me out for my trouble! If I had known this, I would have gotten these parts from Revzilla who discounts them. I also have like week old cheek pads and liner that I guess I just toss? How about credit or trade-in or something?!
So now I have a really good fitting helmet and I go to replace the 2 vents on the top. I pop the old ones off to reveal that UNDER the old vents, the helmet is a BEAUTIFUL light yellow color! Completely different than the rest of the shell! So my week old helmet has a faded shell already??!! Again, the good news is that once I installed these new vents, the helmet is very quiet now, but what is going on with the color and what will it look like in another year of actually being used outside?
Other little things: It is almost impossible to attach a Scalia communicator to this helmet because of the black rubber rim that goes around the bottom. The visor removal is indeed easy, but visor installation requires 4 hands 2 knees! I can’t be the only one having trouble with this as Arai included a CD on shield removal/install with the helmet! Oh yea, the little snap the holds the excess chin-strap is located too close to the buckle so it is almost impossible to snap…it is indeed impossible to snap it with gloves on!
So while I now have a great fitting, comfortable, quiet, Lo-Viz Arai helmet, it just took too dang much money and effort to get here!!
No, I do not recommend this product.
