This is one of the top of the line helmets that HJC makes. I'd say it fits into the "premium" category as far as helmets go, with manufacturers like arai and shoei making the "super premium" helmets. I'd say this gets the job done as far as protection is concerned just as well as those manufacturers except you don't have to pay for all the extra 'features' that some of those helmets come with.

SAS-TEC Back Protector Cutting edge SAS-TEC material is intelligent armor constructed from visco elastic soft foam smart molecules. It has earned the highest CE rating available (CE level 2), during an impact, the armor freezes and hardens, absorbing the shock and distributing its force over a large area to reduce the risk of fractures. as an engineer i love the technology they're putting into this armor. As a rider I love the protection that it offers. Very very flexible when it's warm out. I don't even notice it. I had to cut it down to shape to fit in my rev it Air jacket. It cut really easily and I had read in a few places to cover the cut parts with tape to try and keep moisture out, even though the molecular structure shouldn't be affected by it anyways.

I bought these for pretty cheap. They are my first pair of shift gloves. I mainly got them b/c of the style (flashy without being too loud) and protection. So far I love them, but I can't really speak to durability as it's just about the beginning of riding season in western PA

Is this back protector to be used with or without the factory perforated foam piece?
I guess if the foam piece AND the SAS Tec piece both fit in your slot in your jacket it's probably not a horrible idea to use both. I would think this would get really uncomfortable and would restrict air flow. The sas tec armor manufactured and tested to withstand the hardest impacts by itself, so it's not necessary to use both. Also, the sas tec piece is much more flexible and body conforming then the foam, so the foam might restrict you from getting the full perks of having this armor.
