AltRider Crash Bars BMW R1200GS The BMW motor is powerful yet wide, and you want to protect every inch. Wrap that 1200cc gem with our 1 inch stainless crash bars. AltRider set the bar high on this product. Durable and well engineered, the AltRider crash bars are built with precision-manufactured mounts that fit directly into the existing motor mount. Also, integrates well with the AltRider Upper Crash Bars (sold separately), for even more crash coverage. By utilizing the R 1200 GSs robust frame mount and incorporating the existing frame hardware, AltRider designed a quality piece that will protect your motor. Unlike other crash bars, these do not use flanges or weak tabs and are not hung they are actually mounted. Made with a shot peen satin finish means that even when the bike takes a spill, the stainless bars will never show signs of rust. These crash bars deflect the impact from the cylinders and engine case to the strongest parts of the frame. Unlike other manufacturers, our design provides plenty of clearance around the vulnerable left oil line. It also serves double-duty as a boot rest on long rides! Save yourself hassle and frustration and the purchase of a 200 valve cover by installing AltRider crash bars. Take a moment to review the instructions. The reason we mention this here is to make you aware which mount points on the R 1200 GS have strength. Stainless construction fights corrosion and rust Hand TIG welded crash bars are 1 inch diameter for additional strength Manufactured in America Refined satin peen finish Comes with the Torx bit needed for installation Removal required for valve adjustment

1st off, I did not rate the "performance" or the "durability" of this product seeing as I have just installed them (just 100 miles riding with them) & neither have I "tested" these crash bars!
Did my home work, review ALL the crash bar choices, and decided on these due to look (especially that they are black & few others off that color), quality, and fit/protection. As a bonus, these crash bars are made in America!
Install was straight forward, though requires 2 people AT LEAST to install -- plus some tools that I didn't have handy & had to buy (mostly ratchet extensions & the like, fairly short $).
NOW THE WARNING...
I installed the crash bars after work, while having a few beverages w/ my brother. In the AM, much to my surprise, the bars looked to be crooked! I checked all the mountings for fit & tightness and found all as it should be. I measured & sure enough, the crash bars were significantly closer to the left engine head! No time to take them off, I rode to work w/ plans of writing AltRider an angry email re. poor construction quality... then I noticed that the bars were straight, it was the ENGINE HEADS that are crooked. Apparently, I had missed that my beloved boxer engine is WAY off symmetrical -- due to design!
I've since gotten over the asymmetry (not a lot of that to be found on the GS anyway) and love the bars in both looks & perceived protection.

Sidi Adventure GTX Boots The Sidi Adventure GTX Boots are the gold standard for adventure riding boots. Sidi pulled all the best bits from their famous line of off-road boots and combined them with the legendary quality of their road boots to create the glorious hybrid cyborg that is the Adventure Gore-Tex Boots. A bit more comfortable than off-road boots, the Adventure GTX boots incorporate a hinged ankle support, a rigid and shock-resistant heel cup and composite inner sole with a top grain leather construction, replaceable cam-lock buckles and a sweat wicking cambrelle lining. The slim adjustable calf fits easily inside the pant leg of most riding pants, something that is not always possible with a traditional off-road boot, making them all the more attractive to ADV advocates and enduro enthusiasts. To top off the list of premium feathers these boots are 100 waterproof and breathable with a Gore-Tex lining that is Guaranteed to Keep You Dry . Features Soft rubber sole for maximum grip Replaceable strap system Top grain leather construction Composite inner sole Removable arch support Exclusive cam-lock buckle system Cambrelle lining Slim, cool non-bootie design Rigid, shock resistant, anatomically shaped heel for maximum protection Split grain leather inner anti-wear/heat panel Single Flex System upper

Originally purchased the Sidi Adventure Rain but then saw that the price of the Gore-Tex version had dropped $150! Traded in for the Gore-Tex which is QUITE a step up (and hence the bang for the buck rating).
Boots are quite stiff to start, causing a few missed up-shifts at first. After just a hundred miles or so, I've either become used to the boots or they've already loosened as the miss-shifts have become few & far between -- I had been riding in VERY broken in leather "paratrooper" boots.
The boot fit seems of average width & slightly long length... I am a 8.5-9 wide in street shoes & these fit quite well with thin socks. As a note, the Sidi Adventure Rains seemed to fit significantly narrower.
The boots are new to me, and "untested" in their protection so I have no first hand info in that regards. That said, Anthony's first hand review of their protection quality was MORE than enough to make me feel much safer when wearing the Sidis.

Shoei Qwest Solid Helmet The Shoei Qwest Helmet was built with a focus on minimizing helmet weight, decreasing noise and optimizing fit, comfort and protection to bring a new level of comfort to touring helmets. Featuring a slightly round oval internal shape, the Qwest helmet is manufactured with 4 individual shell sizes to keep the helmet as low-profile as possible. The smaller the helmet shell, the lighter the helmet weight. The Shoei Qwest Helmet also uses the Shoei's CW-1 visor technology with the Q.R.S.A system. This system guarantees a tight seal at the face shield by pulling the shield back to contact the opening seal evenly. The Qwest also touts an extra-wide viewport for additional peripheral vision so you can more easily take in the world around you. Snell M2010 and DOT ratings means the Qwest is no compromise when it comes to safety. Aerodynamic Shell Design Aerodynamic properties are maximized through extensive wind tunnel and feedback from professional riders Dual-Layer EPS liner enhances impact absorption and ventilation Four shell and six EPS liner sizes increase fit options that help to comfortably fit most head sizes Molded air spoiler reduces drag and lift as well as diminishes weight pressure on the neck while riding at high speeds Ventilation System Upper Air Intake Vent is positioned to maximize air volume into the helmet interior Large upper intake vent positioned to maximize performance in high wind conditions Easy to operate large lower intake vent Lower air intake/defroster vent reduces shield fogging and increases ventilation Rear/neck outlets allow for effective air exhaust Breath guard and chin curtain are included Lightweight Advanced Integrated Matrix Plus (AIM+) High performance fiber materials are combined with extremely elastic organic fibers to create a shell structure that is ultra lightweight, rigid and resilient Interior 3D center pad and multi-layered, polyurethane foam cheek pads Cheek pads are replaceable or removable for maintenance Eyeglass-compatible interior Standard chin strap clip neatly secures chin strap CW-1 Shield and Q.R.S.A. Purchased the Qwest as an upgrade/replacement for my 5 year old HJC. Qwest is MUCH lighter & quieter. Only gripe is that the shield fogs easily in cold AMs, though much of this is fixed by using the toggle on the left side that holds the shield partly open -- riding this way significantly increases wind noise however.

Dark enough to take away the sun's glare but not too dark for evening rides if you get stuck out w/o the clear visor. May be too light for those w/ sensitive eyes on sunny days.
