I replaced the stock Metzeler Tourance tires on my 2011 R1200GSA with the TKC80's for better off-road traction. I was surprised how well these knobbies transformed this heavy beast into a more nibble and enjoyable off-road bike.
What astonished me even more was how well they handled on the pavement. They are not sport bike tires by any means. But, it is some kind of design marvel how well these tires grip the pavement.
The tire compound is extremely soft and therefore the tread life is short. I've put 2500 miles on them so far. The front still looks good, but the rear will probably need replacing after another 500 miles or so.
They have less grip when cold, but they quickly heat up. On tight turns you can feel the tires start to side slip as the grip begins to fall off. It is gradual (without suddenly letting go# giving you confidence in the tires traction.
Even though I ride 90 percent on road, I really enjoy the benefit of having knobbies for that 10 percent in the dirt. The added benefit is a tire that handles very well on the pavement. I will definitely continue to use the TKC80's.
Additional note: A friend of mine put Metzler Karoo's on his R1200GS. They also have excellent off-road handling, but slightly less traction on road and are very loud #as in deafening).
