Been running the Sena SMH10R Bluetooth Headset for about a month. Previously was running ear buds corded up to my cell phone for Music (or back in the day a Walkman), Navigation, and the infrequent phone call.
I went with the Sena for numerous reasons. First was the Cost – I didn’t want to spend a lot of $ on something I didn’t know I was going to like. Secondly was the Low Profile of the unit itself. I wear an open face helmet with a Shield and every other Bluetooth Headset looks like a Wart on the side of helmets. The 10R Control Unit is extremely unobtrusive and flows nicely with Helmet lines. Thirdly, and probably most important, was the “external” battery capability. Rechargeable batteries, over time, lose their ability to do so… other units, with BUILT IN battery, will eventually need to be replaced (the entire unit). With the 10R you only need to purchase another battery and plug it in (or carry an extra battery for longer trips).
Installation was fairly straight forward. I used the double sided tape as I will not be switching the unit between helmets and wanted a more “permanent” mount. Sena recommends mounting the battery on the back outside of the helmet. I was able to mount mine inside the helmet between the inner shell and the neck foam pad. This keeps the outside of my helmet much cleaner as the only external item is the controller.
IRT ease of use the push button control unit takes some time to get use to. You have remember which button(s) to press and for how long. Not that big of a deal it just takes practice.
I was somewhat skeptical about the use of the Boom Mike (as my face shield pivots)(without the big ugly foam condom). I’ve taken a few calls while riding and the person on the other end can hear me clearly (though at… ummmmm, “Highway” speeds (wink wink, nod nod) there is wind noise).
Sound quality for calls and navigation is excellent. I marked lower in Sound Quality just because of the lack of Bass with Sena’s Speakers. I like my music with the low tones. As I have quite a bit of room in my helmet’s ear pockets I wish Sena would offer a (even) larger speaker option that would allow for move bass.
I will be purchasing another unit for my Wife’s helmet. Friends with older Sena Units and other Blue Tooth love the design of the 10r and are thinking about switching over. This is a great product!!
Yes, I recommend this product.
