I ride a roadliner and they eat tires, some as fast as 7k miles,so far i have about five thousand miles on this tire and it looks the same as when i bought it almost no loss of tread dept.
As far as the other characteristics of the tire it feels the same as the metzler m880 i was used to,so it gives good traction good wet stability and rolls well into turns.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Does the Commander II need to be balanced?

Yes all tires need to be balanced, you cna have a shop do it with wheel weights or you can put dyna beads in the tire.
