Ankle protection is on par with most riding shoes.
Toe protection is a bit on the soft side.
There's a removable shift pad that comes with the shoes, but is not comfortable to ride with (as it adds a "lump" on the sole, which makes aligning it on the pegs a bit difficult.
It's also very easy to lose :)
Other than that- these are very comfortable shoes.
Slightly larger than the noted size, which allows for using thick and thin socks just as easily- thanks to lacing system.
Speaking of which, with narrow fit pants, I haven't yet experienced any issues with the laces being caught in the controls.
Rides: 2009 Honda CB1000R
Yes, I recommend this product.

Alpinestars S-MX1 Boots A complete revamp of its predecessor, the Alpinestars S-MX 1 Boot is low profile, comfortable, and fuctional with a refreshed style in both black and white. It also has a toe slider, velcro adjustment strap and a styled TPU shift pad. This shoe will go up against any of the other sport riding shoes and boots in the 100 to 200 range. Look for the S-MX 1 Riding Shoes to be a perennial favorite for the casual enthusiast and hard core sport riders. Features Upper constructed from lightweight microfiber Breathable mesh inserts and perforated side panel for enhanced ventilation Foam backed, double density ankle protector on the medial side Reinforced toebox layered under the microfiber upper Plush 3D mesh inner liner Combination zipper and Velcro strap closure system Outsole constructed with the same advanced rubber compound as the S-MX 5 Boot External TPU protection on the outer ankle External TPU shift pad, slider and heel counter Integrated shank in the sole for extra rigidity Anatomically profiled EVA foam footbed.

I'm looking for a street book like the A* SMX-1. I wear size 13 and my foot runs a bit wide. What boots/sizing would you recommend?

Both Rev'it and TCX shoes that i've tried run large- so you can try there.
also check the RevZilla Touring and Commuting Boots review-

I wear a size 16, will these fit?

I wear a size 16 tennis shoe (Vans to be specific) and am having a hard time finding riding shoes that will fit me. I was told these and the MX2 model run a bit larger than normal shoe sizes. Will the Euro size 50 fit?
The shoes run about 1 Euro size larger, so where i usually fit 43 pretty snugly (actually i look for 43.5 where possible) these 43 are more like rev'it 44.
another thing is that if your feet arent too wide- you could possibly unlace them all the way to make them even looser.

all in all- nothing beats trying them on!
