Hopefully I never have to test out this back protector. It is thick but flexible and very comfortable. I have this back protector installed in a Dainese "new" Newson perfortated jacket. It contours to and moves with my back very well. Air circulation seems good, but a ride in hot weather will be the true test.
The only odd thing about the back pad is it needs to be installed upside down in the jacket. Don't go by the label sewn onto the back pad. I found this out when I compared the Forcefield back pad to the Dainese back pad it is meant to replace. I confirmed this by calling the knowledgable staff at Revzilla.
Pros Rugged, Comfortable
Yes, I recommend this product.

 Dainese Newsan New Leather Jacket
Dainese Newsan New Leather Jacket
Dainese New Leather Jacket This jacket provides the motorcycle rider with nearly the same degree of protection as an automobile body. The association above is emphasized by the special paint treatment given to the aluminum inserts on the shoulders that gives the jacket the look of a new material and enhances the concept of rider/motorcycle integration. D-Skin leather, composite protectors, and the possibility to insert the G-type back protector guarantee elevated levels of protection. The 3D Bubble liner ensures adequate internal temperature control, while the elasticated inserts on the sleeves and elbows and the jacket-pants fastening zipper ensure freedom of movement, ergonomics, and practicality. Protection Composite protectors certified to EN 1621.197. Co-injected shoulder with Aluminium insert. Abrasion and Tear Resistance D-Skin leather. Comfort Ergonomics Jacket-trousers fastening system. Adjustment strap on neck. Waist adjustment Inserts in elasticated fabric. Elasticated inserts. Temperature Regulation 3d bubble fixed liner with air spaces. My first riding impressions of the Newsan New Perforated Jacket.

This jacket is the perforated version which has perforations on the entire front of the torso. So far I have ridden in temperatures ranging from 56* to 65* F. The 3D bubble liner works as advertised, maintaining a comfortable temperature. When the temp. dips to the mid-50's I felt a little chilly. I ride a KTM 690 Duke with the "touring" fairing and the wind still hits me at breast-level. Unfortunately I missed the opportunity to ride in the record breaking heat this past week, here in San Diego County.
Fastening the collar into the "loose" position is almost a two handed affair, especially when wearing sport-bike oriented gloves. Not a big deal though.
The Dainese products are pricey, but there is a huge difference in comfort when compared to the more mass produced products on the market (A-Stars, Icon etc.) This jacket replaces my Vanson Hurricane jacket which was never completely comfortable and I spent hours trying to find the correct position for the shoulder armor.
I'm hoping for more hot days soon, too test the ventilation properties of this jacket.
Pros Fashionable, Comfortable
Yes, I recommend this product.

Detachable shovel pocket?

I see that the shovel pocket has two "squeeze clip" attachment/detachment points above it, but I cannot discern how it is attached at the bottom to the main bag. Is the shovel pocket (with its attached compartment) completely removable? Overall, this Klim product, compared to other backpacks you offer, strikes me as a screaming bargain. Thanks for any info.
I have a couple of packs witch have "shovel" pockets. None are detachable. The upper straps witch have quick-detach buckles are compression straps. Combined with the elastic straps, which are sewn to the pack on the sides, near the bottom of the pocket, allow the pack to expand or contract for larger or smaller objects. The pocket is sewn to the body of the pack and may have a small opening at the bottom for the handle of a shovel or longer items. The quick-detach buckles at the top allow the pocket to be opened wide for easy access to the items in it.

Hope this helps.
