I purchased two Icon Airmada helmets two months ago, both with RST Silver shields.
There's no denying the RST shields look cool, but the coating isn't terribly durable. I noticed a spot near the top where the coating is wearing off. Maybe this is caused by the helmet brushing up on my pants while walking, helmet in hand.
Other than that, the shield is very sturdy.
I think the price is a little high, but I'm not really disappointed with the product.

I was originally going to purchase an Icon Airframe. I'm glad I waited and looked around a bit more. This helmet is not only much cheaper, but improves on the Airframe's ventilation. I understand it's cheaper due to the materials used in the shell construction, but the helmet is solid thus far and it keeps me cool in 100+ degree weather.
I purchased the RST Silver visor to accompany the Rubatone finish on the helmet. It looks pretty awesome.
The fit is spot on for me and though it says 'long oval headform,' it fits my relatively round head wonderfully.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Do I need to purchase the side plates or can I use the ones that came with the helmet?

You can use the side plates that came with the helmet. The only disadvantage to this, is changing them over each time you put your other lens on (if you have two shields: day and night). Other than that, you can ride without side plates, though a whistling noise has been reported when doing this.

What does RST stand for?

I'm not entirely sure... I thought it had to do with the reflective coating.

Perhaps it stands for Reflective Surface Treatment?

Are some shields better in certain condition? Can you post details in the answer?

Though not recommended, I use my RST Silver faceshield at night with no problems. It's not a very dark tint when looking from the inside, out.
