I bought these pants as over pants. I wanted fowl weather and cold protection headed into the colder months. I bought a size up to easily fit over jeans. They are great. There is plenty of ability to cinch them down to keep them tight enough in the waist. They are pretty easy to get over boots without having to take the boots off as long as you use the side zips. The armor in them seems pretty good compared to other pants I have or have tried.
They are extremely versatile being able to have an insulated liner or not, mesh (though I'd never trust the mesh alone), or panels unzipped for as much ventilation as you want. It was clear after buying them that I could use them all year around if I wanted to. However they would be pretty bulky or loose with only shorts under them but that's because I bought up a size.
