Good part:
Ordered headset on 03/06/2012, and received headset from Revzilla the next day. Installation was easy and straight forward. Connection, and functionality with my iPhone was just what I wanted/expected.
Bad part:
After about 3-4 weeks of usage, the microphone stopped working. I tracked the issue down to the cord being damaged just below where it connects to the main unit, and wraps around the bottom edge of the helmet. This is an exposed part of the cord and may be damaged if helmet is dropped just right (or wrong). However, to my recollection, I did not drop my helmet, nor handle it in a careless manner. I solved the issue by ordering the larger speakers, which includes the damaged cord part. Larger speakers did not effect sound quality, and volume much.
4 months after install; the dial fell off during travel, leaving only a small metal pin to operate the unit with. Again, the dial may have been damaged by rough handling, but I don't think I handle my helmet rougher than the average motorcyclist.
3 weeks ago: Emailed Sena support, asking about how to replace dial, and damaged speakers. Took 10 days to get reply, pointing me towards their on-line warranty replacement form.
2 weeks ago: main unit dead. Charging light comes on, but won't start up even after charging over night.
Today: submitted on-line form to have unit replaced under warranty.
Conclusion: For the price this is not a bad purchase but you may want to handle with care. For most parts it performs as advertised, and I love that you can charge it while using it. Heavy usage probably did contribute to the headsets demise. I used it nearly daily, and did about 8K miles of riding in all kinds of weather before it went dead. Despite the issues, I give the product three stars, and would still recommend it for less heavy use by riders on a limited budget. You get what you pay for.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Can these units be charged off of bike power while underway? I intend to play music, so that will eat the battery.

I don't mind a wire during charging; I may go for several days camping and have no access to electricity during the evening, so will not be able to plug it into the wall, as the manual seems to indicate is the only charging method.
Yes, it should work connected to the bike with a USB cable. However, you cannot charge while riding in rain as the charge socket on the main unit needs to be covered to keep the innards dry. I used an external battery (1600 mAh) in my inner pocket connected to the unit to extend the battery life on a longer ride. It gave me uninterrupted use on a 3 day (1K) tour with 8+ hours use per day without the need for a wall socket.
